Rarely can we think of anything more important than keeping our homes and families safe. It is a sad fact of life, though, that there are unscrupulous people in the world and all around us that wouldn’t think twice about breaking into a house if they thought they could get away with it. This is why we must all take important measures to ensure that our homes and our families are as protected as they can be at all times.
Outdoor lighting looks nice, but that is not the only reason to have it. The well-lit perimeter of your home is seen as a deterrent to a thief who may be casing houses or cars to break into. A typical porch light just isn’t enough, though. You need lighting that clearly illuminates your driveway, your cars, your garage door and the gate entrance to your back yard. If thieves think they will be easily seen, they will pass your house and look for another one that will be easier to break into and get away with it. Motion sensing lights are the best, as they turn themselves on whenever someone crosses the sensor beam. A thief may see that light come on and believe he’s been seen; this will make him run away before he has a chance to do any damage.
Monitored Home Alarm Systems
A monitored home alarm system serves more than one purpose. With sensors on every door and window, you will hear a beep when one of them is opened. If you have small children, they love to play with door knobs and can be out the door before you realize they’re gone. With the door and window sensors, however, you will know immediately if your child has managed to open a door to the outside. This feature is available with or without the alarm actually activated. When the alarm is activated and one of the door or window sensors goes off, the alarm will sound immediately and the monitoring company will be alerted that there may be trouble at your address. Depending on the service provider, a representative may attempt to reach you by phone if this happens or they may just dispatch the police right away. A monitored home alarm system is one of the best defenses against predators and break-ins. The company will give you stickers for your windows and a sign for your yard stating that your home is protected by security patrol, which a burglar will see and immediately walk away.
Security cameras are such high quality now that even in low-light situations a trespasser can be caught on camera and recorded. Some camera models come equipped with a motion detector that only turns the camera on when there is movement within the field area of the sensor. A security camera is definitely something you want a trespasser to see because the last thing they want is their ugly mugs on camera, caught sneaking around your house for no good reason. There are even “look alike” cameras that look just like real security cameras but are just empty shells. They are so convincing that a thief will see it and run off thinking he’s about to be caught on camera. The decoy cameras cost a lot less than actual security cameras, so if you’re on a budget you may want to consider this option to deter any trouble makers from trespassing on your property, or worse, attempt to break in.
The bottom line when it comes to home security is to deter people with bad intentions away from your home so that you never have to confront one. If they are willing to steal, they may be armed and dangerous as well, so it is best to install security measures that will make a thief want to turn and run the other way.
